"We are Going to Drain Every Ounce of Remaining Sweat On Stage" - The Kenneths
Formed in 2015, London based punks The Kenneths have been climbing incredibly quick in the punk/rock scene, jumping from supporting Yellowcard to a two page spread in Kerrang’s first issue of 2017. The band includes Josh Weller, both previous host of much loved podcast “Excitable Boy” and former solo act, touring and playing with the likes of Mumford and Sons and Florence and the Machine. Lewis Maynard, the bass tone magician, previously of pop/funk band LA Shark, and Aicha Djidjelli, the most punk female percussionist this writer can think of, are also in the band. The not-so-obvious collection of musicians, bonded by their shared passion for real punk, have developed this refreshed angle of a previously saturated genre.
The trio began with a collection of rough demos that became their debut EP K, which was discovered by Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman and got them on the much idolised US tour. This opportunity encouraged them to release a further EP, E, which they released during the tour, cementing them as not a one hit band. The Kenneths' video for their song ‘Aint Got No Game’ stars youtube celebrity Thomas Gray.
This character comedian plays an individual in everyday scenarios but is attached to an abs toner, which gives him electric shocks through out the video. Incredibly humorous and odd, this video complements the song entirely. The Kenneth's are no strangers to releasing bizarre music videos. Their most recent video for ‘Hollywood’ is a collection of stock footage of genuine colonoscopies, sending you on a journey of the human throat to the intenstines (not for the faint hearted).
Their most recent european tour with pop/punk veterans Yellowcard took them from Koln, Germany, to Rock City, Nottingham playing to 2500+ sized audiences, which has helped them to truly establish themselves as the band to watch in 2017. During the twelve date tour, drummer Aicha broke her foot in a karaoke accident (obviously) and was advised by doctors to avoid playing for six weeks. However, this true punk finished her remaining seven dates like a true Sex Pistols trooper and refused to lose 0% of their live, energetic performances.
Up and coming for the Kenneths is their multiple dates for Independent Venue Week. Performing in St Albans, London, Edinburgh and Coventry, I would advise seeing them while they are still playing in small and sweaty venues, as these anarchists are destined for bigger crowds and bigger venues.
