We talk influences and life dreams with upcoming French electro duo, The Dualz
They've played in the most prestigious French nightclubs and festivals, supporting artists like Nina Kraviz, Kosme and Joris Delacroix.
They will be performing this summer at The Live Au Pont Festival, where Jamie XX himself is expected to be, their first album reached first place on the iTunes top dance chart. Needless to say that, if you don’t know them, you’re missing out on something big!
For those who don’t know you yet, who are you? How long have you been making music together? How would you introduce yourself?
We’re Kevin and Geoffrey. We’re both 27 and we started making music on our own 9 years ago. The Dualz is a five years old band. We’re really fusional and consider ourselves like brothers.
When we listen to this album, the least that can be said is that it’s very eclectic. We can hear an electric guitar in your first track 'Superdualz' while remaining very electro; 'Power' is rather gothic in a Gesalffestein style; 'Radioactivity' reminds of 'Blue Monday'. What are your musical influences? Have you got the same ones?
This album is like a sort of business card for us, we wanted to show that our music is not about house and techno only, we’re sometimes more pop, or rock. Musically speaking, we like to experience new things and reinvent ourselves while keeping our own style.
We have the same musical influences, very eclectic. We listen to artists such as Trentemoller, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Foals, Tiga, Moderat, Vitalic, Miss Kittin, Chet Faker, Fink, Daft Punk, Red Hot Chilli Peppers…
When we get together and play new tracks we’ve just discovered, we often realise that we were both listening to the same ones. We often have the same 'musical crushes'.
How do you guys work? Do you attach importance to hardware and instruments or are you into softwares, or both?
We always start recording demos together or individually, and then we develop them with our acoustic and synthetic instruments and voice recordings.
We both are the brains; there is no predefined role. The only thing that matters is how old the Rum is! (hahaha)
We’re always having fun playing around with an original idea with Kevin playing piano and Geoffrey singing or playing guitar. To find new ideas, we just give our imagination free rein.
If I’m not mistaken the label you're signed to, Way Of House’s (WOH), the owner is your friend. WOH also launched duo Synapson’s career, and they have now released their first album with Sony Music; I imagine he must be really proud of it, and proud of you…
Indeed we think he’s really proud of how it is going, especially after signing artists such as Between Us, Synapson, Joris Delacroix, and us with this first album that we have just released.
France has a huge electro music legacy… How do you find the French electro music scene? What do you think about precursors like Jean-Michel Jarre, Laurent Garnier, The Hacker, Daft Punk, Miss Kittin?
We both think that the electro music scene is doing well thanks to amazing artists such as Daft Punk, Miss Kittin, Stromae (yes, he's Belgian but he sings in French!), Christine And The Queens, The Avener, Synapson, Joris Delacroix. We’re glad to see that French talent is recognised at a worldwide level.
Your album ranked 32th at iTunes top album and first at the Top Dance Album, just before Discovery and Human After All by Daft Punk. Silly question but, what does it feel like?
We just can’t believe it, we just let the magic play and we’re extremely delighted. After more than 2 years of hard work behind the scenes, this feeling of recognition is exhilarating. We can’t explain our enthusiasm for our album though.
What are your projects for the rest of 2016?
With all this good news, we’re pumped up and we keep on producing new tracks and improving our live show to introduce our album for our next gigs. We're looking forward to play at the Live Au Pont Festival and the Green Festival, which will be our two most important gigs of the summer.
You made yourself known with your remixes of Tiga, Gran Cavaliere, Magit Cacoon, GusGus, but also thanks to your featuring of the French singer, Jiovana. She sings on three tracks of your album. Would she be the third member of your duo?
She’s definitely an integral part of the band. She has her own vision of electronic music and brings us enough maturity, space and freedom, to make some good work. Making music together is always a kind of magic.
As a band, what is your biggest dream?
First of all, we’d love to be able to live from music and travel around the world to share our passion. Whatever the place, small venues or big festivals, the only thing that matters is the interaction between our audience and us. We’re craving amazing memories.

The French duo has just released their first music video for their record 'Power', which is part of their debut album. Did I say it was absolutely beautiful? Well, now you know it.
As mentioned earlier in the interview, this is a quite dark techno. That is indeed the last that can be said. Down tempo heady synth patches, stressful atmosphere with up and down sound sirens look-alike, a little bit of saturation; that’s basically what Power is made of. And it sounds sick.
Directed by Bastien Sablé, this music video fits perfectly the atmosphere of the track; between big landscapes, shades of grey (but definitely less than 50, don’t worry), and slow motion.
With 'Power', the duo wanted to show how tough life can be sometimes; symbolizing representation of an upset relationship. The two are both getting mentally and physically hurt, by this mysterious lady they are connected to. Tragic as it may seem, 'Power' gives us a positive message. The whole track is about finding the force and the 'Power' to heal and live a better future. At the end of the track they find themselves again, assuming that they came through this trial.
