An Interview with Paride Saraceni

Satruday 27t February, Sabajaq returns to Egg for their first edition of 2016. The brainchild of Jim Warboy, the creative force behind such parties as Night Train, Caligula, Heroes and All You Can Eat, the party has become known for mixing the biggest international names in house and techno with London's most cutting edge DJs, performers and dancers. For their first installment of the year, they've come back hard with a line up inlcuding two extended three-hour sets from Pig&Dan and Pleasurekraft. 

Ahead of his set at Sabajaz, we touch down with the rising star who kicked off 2016 with a release on Adam Beyer’s Truesoul, Paride Saraceni.

What can party people expect from your set, styles and sounds at the Sabajaq party? 

Hard to say really... I don’t play a specific genre as I love all kinds of music. You can expect from me both slow tech house or pumping techno depending on the situation, time, place and mood, but I think regardless of style or sound I prefer organic-oriented music. I specifically look for musical works that tell a story, that are rich and colourful and that feel spatially engaging, as opposed to perhaps dry club tools or overly “loopy” music.  In general I guess you can expect some nice and dynamic story-telling, a lot of energy, heavy bass, and some little treats :)

Do you have any secret weapons you can share with us? 

Sure I do! Perhaps my recent Burning EP on Truesoul, which I have been playing around a lot lately - some people might have got to know of it last year thanks to Adam Beyer - and I regularly make edits of tracks or songs I feel connected to or that have inspired me in the past and I drop them during my sets. I have also made some few edits of some well known old records as I wanted to give them a chance to smash vibes in 2016 also but let me just not spoil the surprise!

Can you tell us what's new for you in terms of productions, remixes, projects etc? 
As I said I have just released my Burning EP on Adam’s Truesoul, and happily to see it #3 in chart on Beatport among other stores. I also have an upcoming EP on Christian Smith’s Tronic, which will be out on March 7th, which is already being spun around by other Djs and as well I am currently working on my own concept party which takes place regularly every summer in Italy: The Casbah Project, which is based on a blending of music, architecture, design and local culture in relation to its place! How does playing in London, especially @ Egg London compare to other cities or countries, and do you count London as one of your favourite spots? 
I love London and I love Egg! it is actually one of my favourite clubs globally and definitely a place where I had the best parties ever in the past. 
What I like about Egg, considering that I live in London, is that many of my friends can come to see me playing as well and we can really smash the party together. I also like the way the club is laid out and its production, for instance I like that the booths are not so separate from the crowd, like in many clubs are, and in this way it is easier for me to get to know the people and feel them better. I’m very excited to be back after such a long time!

How does it feel to have been working in House and Techno music for the last 7 years or and  what are you proudest moments/memories ? 

It makes me go WOW! as I have not realised that all this time has passed, but I feel ever more intrigued, especially because the scene has so much evolved since I first started making and playing music that I always get new sounds inspiring me, and I also try to develop what I feel will be the next step, the next wave. 
Proud-wise I think that already from my first productions I was very happy (and very surprised) to have my works on massive labels and compilations such as Carl Cox’s Black Rock Desert on Global Underground, and other of my first works being played by Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Dubfire and Monika Kruse for instance. II would say that I do feel very blessed and lucky to have been able to travel to and perform at some of the world’s most important venues such as Cielo in NYC, Womb Tokyo or City Hall in Barcelona, which have definitely been amazing and unexpected achievements so far.


How do you manage to keep it fresh, new and vital? Is it a case of pressure as  DJ/Producer to always be one step ahead in the house/techno scene? 

I have no idea, it just comes, I just play what I like and i let it inspire me. I get very bored of things easily and I always have to look for something more engaging, more complicated and sophisticated. Sometimes I actually become nostalgic about a certain sound type that has characterised an entire period of my life, which suddenly starts to sound boring to me, and as much as I do want to keep my head into it and be consistent with it as I was perhaps, deep inside I feel that I have to move on to something new and fresher.

Somehow this transition always proves to be correct, and eventually I also notice how also everything shifts towards that direction, and as a consequence, I start to re-shape my new sound type. I guess it’s an instinct-driven factor and my being just needs refreshing with new sounds.
 

In addition to this I have decided to listen to myself more, and to not be pressurised by anything or anyone in term of what I should produce or should not, what should I play or should not, and how much music should I release. Since I am more connected to myself and act instinctively everything's started to take off for me and great things started flowing all of a sudden. 


Recording & Producing must keep you busy. Do you have your own label and is there any track that you’re particularly proud of?

I co-run the Redrum Music label and run my own agency, Post Scriptum Music, which at the moment is a real creative platform by which I and my enthusiastic team are creating events (such as the above mentioned Casbah Project) as well as a label-to-be when times will be more mature for it.
I am mostly proud of the music which I feel expresses my thoughts in the best way, for instance Bushido, Dissolute, and my recent Burning EP and here's an insight to its creation in more depth, some of which also happened to be my best-sellers with great results in the music charts.. 

What was your first break and first big record and did it set you on your path? 

I’ll be honest, I never had a big record at the start and that is not what set me on the path. On the contrary, I have had a lot of successful works but not crossover hits which has allowed me to slowly get to work with more relevant labels, as well as interesting and talented artists, and play in always more interesting parties. In a way I have taken the “longer” path but there was no option for me as I never managed to have management watching my back and planning things for me, or push me in the press etc, neither a booking agency that would look for gigs for me until only recently, which I am happy for after all these years to have found some people who believe in what I do. 


However some records that have been milestones for me were without doubt my Betrayal EP with a Nicole Moudaber Remix in 2012, my “Feel The Vibe” feat. Monce on our label Redrum Music,  Dissolute on Maya Jane Coles’ Fabric 75 and later on Snatch! and the Burning EP which not only has seen my work make the Beatport top 3 after four years, but it also signified an achievement I was working on for years and that being working with Adam Beyer and releasing music on one of his imprints.


You grew up in Italy, Switzerland and then moved to London, how much of an influence did the neighbourhoods around you have on your path towards  music? Were there any other major influences such as key people, DJ's, producers or clubs etc? 

Of course, there have been a lot of people who influenced my music, starting from Nicolas Duvoisin who owned the record store I used to buy records from in Geneva, to my friend Massimo Agnelli who let me to play in a 1000+ people club for the first time, to all the parties I used to attend in Lausanne, and later in London and of course to all the artists who have shaped my music selection and defined my taste for electronic music, among the long list of names I would like to mention Pig & Dan, whom I have already worked in the past and that I am finally very happy to meet and share decks with!


So what does the future hold for you? 
hopefully a lot of happy moments :D … I guess the best way to find it out is to look out for them and to keep in touch :)
