'We really enjoy electronic and instrumental music and wanted to ensure a multi-genre approach' - Olly Edgecombe

Other | Wednesday 13th January 2016 | Arren

In 2015, Olly Edgecombe set up Pegdoll, a new hub for creative, forward-thinking electronic music.

They had a great debut year with a host of futuristic music, living up to their ethos. They are now planning ahead for their second year and are ready to make it even better than their last. Olly had a little chat with us to introduce his imprint, and give a little insight into what we can expect this year!

Please tell us about Pegdoll's background. What made you decide to start the label?

I'd been producing and DJing as Cottonmouth for a number of years. The first label I worked with was the Bermuda based Permanent Damage and it was a really postive experience. I think they planted the seed for starting my own label, I had quite a clear aesthetic for my own label and was exploring how to set it up - I spent a great deal of time talking with Ben from Permanent Damage, I asked so many questions that I ended up asking Ben to help run the label - thankfully he agreed.

What's your vision for the label?

I wanted to create a label that was unique, would give artists the opportunity to get full support in terms of PR, physical releases, quality mastering and advice/support where needed.

What kind of sound will you be going for?

We both agreed from the onset that we wanted a sound that represented our vision and vice-versa. We really enjoy electronic and instrumental music and wanted to ensure a multi-genre approach that we feel has the Pegdoll blood running through it's veins.

Which artists are you working with at the moment?

Himalia, of course, someone who has done a number of tracks for us. Whenever he sends us something both of us end up smiling as he is just a great producer with a solid sound that really has the potential for longevity.

Our next release is with Oscuro, he is a unique creator who's electronic based sounds incorporate some deep textural pieces alongside Foley and found sounds. His EP will be out at the end of Feburary and has some great collabs on board including Archer and Mirror Signal.

Thostey is someone who we have recently started working with and his music excites us as it's so different.

We are also working with Phlux who has done some remixes for us and should have an EP/album out soon. He produces what he calls "Phluxste" which we love, it's a mix of electronic, dub/trap and minimal beats.

There are a few other artists that we have on the horizon, one being Miteh, who has an almost alternative rock meets downtempo folk bass genre going on, if you can imagine that!?

Himalia - Distances Remixes is a wicked, diverse release! What else can we expect to hear from Himalia? Are you planning to do more remix EPs like this?

Thanks! We love it too. Distances Remixed felt more organic than pre-planned and I remember listening to the Despicable Youth remix thinking, 'this is massive', then the tracks just kept coming. It would have been wrong to have sat on the tracks, they really needed to be heard. Himalia will have another album out next year, it should be on vinyl too which is one of out targets.

What have been absolute highlights since the start of the label?

There have been loads! Serious radio play on BBC Radio 1/1xtra/2 and 6 Music. XFM, Soho Radio, Kiss FM, Noisia Radio. Licensing Himalia So Long Ago to Cafe del Mar. iTunes features in nearly all European stores.

But more importantly, we've met some good people who are as enthusiatic about music as we are, which for us is the most important thing.

Where can people hear the sound of Pegdoll next?

All good digitial and streaming stores, plus our website (available below) where we have some very cool CDs and cassettes available and soon, vinyl!

If Pegdoll was an animal what would it be and why?

Pegdoll would be a Gorilla because we love Gorillas.
