Beardyman Interview

Other | Monday 13th August 2012 | Annalisa

In light of his upcoming show at KOKO on the 22nd September, Guestlist were able to get a few words from the bearded beatbox wonder

When did start making your music?

As far back as I can remember I've been making music in some shape or form. Playing piano when I was 5, beatboxing since I was 3, writing songs and such.

What music influenced you when you started out?

All music influences me… Except pop.

Where was your first gig and do you remember roughly how many people were there?

My first beatbox gig was in Shoreditch in 2004 and looking back it was shit, well, I was shit, though at the time I thought I was amazing. There were maybe 50 people there. The crowd seemed to love it but this was nearly 10 years ago, simpler times, most people hadn't even heard of beatbox, I tended to be treated like a mystic or a conjurer or something by bedazzled punters who thought it was witchcraft.

What are your favourite festivals to play at or go to?

Any size festival can be fun but the most fun ones are a perfect balance of solid organization, good vibes and discerning music-loving crowds.

What's the biggest venue you've played?

Over 60,000 in Finsbury Park for rise festival. It’s a mad feeling playing to that many people.

Tell us about an embarrassing moment or a shocker that you've had on stage

I have technical hitches all the time but most of the time I’m the only person who notices. Last night the screen behind me fell down… People noticed that.

What's the next step for you?

I'm touring at the moment with a BEA version of a live looping system I’ve had built for me from scratch. No-one has ever attempted anything like this but there was no other way for me to do the show that I’ve had in my head for so long but never been able to do. So now it’s just a matter of getting it perfect. Which I’m really excited about. The bulk of the work is done and the system is unlike anything else in the world. The noises it can make are insane.

If you were invisible for a day what would you do?

Kill David Cameron and rape Nick Clegg.

Sum up Beardyman is a sentence

Twat.
