Freelance news photographer Joel Goodman was 'in the right place at the right time', in his own words, when he clicked the shutter and captured the image which shook the internet on the first day of 2016.
The image, shown above, depicts chaos unravelling on the streets of Manchester on New Year’s Eve, offering a starkly funny representation of British youth culture and urban life. The photo, a candid shot of revellers clashing with police, has been compared to ‘a beautiful painting’ and lauded for its composition.
The photo originally appeared on the Manchester Evening News website on New Year’s Day and was soon tweeted by BBC producer Roland Hughes. The tweet has since been retweeted over 25000 times.
