The 1970s has become one of the most iconic decades for fashion. These 10 years were the ultimate in groovy, far out styles, taking elements of the 60s, and making them more flamboyant! The decade had it all, primarily known for the hippie chic look, it also saw a rise in power dressing, glam rock and punk.
Fast forward to the summer of 2015 and this season we are stepping back in time to the 70s, to embrace this retro trend. Once again fringe, suede, flares and platforms are dominating SS15 runway shows, as modern-day designers are inspired by the icons of the era.
So you will want to make sure your wardrobe is up-to-date with the some staple 70s pieces. Here are 6 items you must invest in this summer to ensure you look like you have stepped straight out of the 1970s.
Flares
It is time to put the skinny jeans to the back of the wardrobe and dust off the flares! A pair of super-size denim or suede flares, the bigger the better, will instantly give any outfit a 70s vibe. Team them with psychedelic florals and round framed sunnies to really nail the 70s hippy look.
Boho Blouse
Boho details such as crochet and fringing will add a 70s feel to an item. Chic and easy to wear, this season’s signature piece is the boho blouse. Perfect to team with your flares for the complete 70s look, whilst providing much needed comfort during the hot summer months.
Culottes
Culottes are a funky trend from the 70s that you either love or hate, but a 70s wardrobe would not be complete without a pair of them! What could be better than an item of clothing that gives the comfort of a skirt with the functionality of trousers!?
Paisley Print Dress
In terms of length the choice is yours! Dresses and skirts were popular in three lengths during this period, the traditional mini from the 60’s, the new midi - which landed between the knee and ankle and the maxi - which reached the floor. To look and feel like a 70’s bohemian babe this summer think paisley print, off the shoulder and wide sleeves. These BV dresses have a variety of designs to give a 70s feel to any occasion, from a day at the office to a night on the town.
Floppy Hats
Be bang on trend this summer with a floppy wide brimmed hat. Fedoras are already a staple item of many a girls wardrobe and will add a 70s feel to your outfits. Perfect to shield your eyes from the summer sun, as well as being ideal to team with any of your 70’s item to really finish off the look.
Block Heels
Don’t forget about your shoes, the 70s saw women adding at least four or five inches to their height. So it is time to swap the comfy trainers for a pair of towering platform sandals or wedges in warm and earthy colours. These will look great with either your 70’s inspired dress or trousers!
Mix and match these 70’s must haves and you are sure to look “Groovy Baby”!
