The future is androgynous

Other | Saturday 10th October 2015 | Eva

Fashion is drifting in a new direction.

There's a whole host of new brands available, offering a range of masculine clothings for females and vice versa. Even the high street is doing it - shirt dresses for girls (ASOS), tailored super short shorts for boys (Topman). These are just some of the ways the lines are blurred between masculine and feminine style.

Androgynous models such as Andreja Pejic, Vincent Beier and Willy Cartier have been the stars of this year's catwalks. Guys even walked in John Galliano`s boys for Maison Margiela SS16 show.

Some people don't fall neatly into a single definition of "masculine" or "feminine”, and nowadays we have the courage to openly talk about it and show it off.

Androgyny became popular in the music world in 1972 when David Bowie released his cult album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders From Mars, and in the fashion world in 1990 when k.d.lang was on the cover of Vanity Fair dressed as a man being shaved by supermodel Cindy Crawford.

We want to be different, we want to show who we really are, we are rejecting the notion that only "men" wear "menswear" and "women" wear "womenswear". Finally big designers are creating garments to fit all bodies and styles.
