Universal Themes - the explosion of Sun Kil Moon

Indie | Thursday 2nd July 2015 | Carl

For his new record Universal Themes, Mark Kozelec aka Sun Kil Moon quits folk music and goes far away towards new sounds and colours.

Sun Kil Moon comes from California, a place where the music often reflects the weather; sunny and restful. After a beautiful LP in 2014 - Benji (Caldo Verde Records) - the indie folk musician has taken his songwriting style in a different direction.

Universal Themes begins very simply. We imagine a discussion between two neighbours chatting about their everyday life during a summer afternoon pruning a hedge. But after a few minutes, the guy stucks his pruning shears into his neighbour's eyes, then sets fire to his garden. What happened to this calm and measured man?

Mark Kozelek talks about his life memories and every song sounds private. His voice seems to have aged but still remains magnificent. Sitting between folk and rap, this album is sincere and elegant, although perhaps not beautiful, with guitar and applied arpeggios composing the main themes of this heavy, violent but sincere life testimonial.

Mark Kozelek has a very long discography, having been actively creating since 1989. Those years of folk and indie rock are very far away from Universal Themes. This LP is like an eruption, one which follows the metamorphosis that began with his last record in 2014.
