Rock Werchter festival has bands and beer galore!

Indie | Wednesday 6th May 2015 | Sarah

Almost thirty years on from its first appearance as a small, one-day festival, Rock Werchter has scooped up the ILMC's Best Festival In The World award 5 times en route to taking its place amongst Europe's elite.

Last year saw an incredible array of music played out to 150,000 people, with the sonic gauge swinging from the heavy soar of Metallica to the more playful edge of Arctic Monkeys, and pretty much anything you could think of in between. Throw in just a sprinkle of electronic and hip-hop acts – Skrillex, Major Lazer, Stromae – and you've got one of the biggest and most popular festivals on the continent.

This year the line-up is crazy good -  Alt-J, Tove Lo, Christine and the Queens, Die Antwoord, Lenny Kravitz, FKA twigs and Muse, whose new album Drones drops on 8th June, are all playing. Catching all these great acts is requires a bit of effort, and that's where the great Belgian traditions of frites and beer come in. Bountiful food stands fry up potatoes and slather them with traditional mayonnaise. Waffles, pizzas and wok dishes supplement the wares, while Belgium's famous brews provide liquid nourishment. The local selection flowing from the taps—Trappist ales, fruity lambics and head-walloping dubbels and tripels - is awesome enough to rival most full-on beer festivals.
