Artist of the Month: Banks

Indie | Monday 10th June 2013 |

Banks is a singer/songwriter who looks set to become LA’s answer to Jessie Ware. Having first caught the attention of radio 1 earlier this year with her collaboration with Lil Silva, “Work” was played by Zane Lowe and Annie Mac and became a popular club song. Since then, she’s released music of an entirely different flavour. The first of these was “Before I Ever Met You” – a raw honest story of a break up, told through the quiet tension of Banks’ beautiful vocals over a moody, electro-tinged guitar bassline. Also featured on the EP was Fall Over, continuing the soulful retelling of a flawed relationship – the track opens with Banks singing – almost wailing, if it wasn’t so beautiful – “why, why?” . The latest offering is a more uplifting but equally honest song about tentatively starting a new relationship and perhaps finding love at the end, Warm Water. Produced by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, this collaboration looks to finally earn Banks the recognition she deserves – everything she has released so far is full of raw, honest lyrics, beautiful vocals and a unique, reflective indie electro sound which doesn’t lose its ability to touch your emotions when played repeatedly. 2013 could be a big year for this talented artist.
