Beady Eye - BE Review

Indie | Monday 10th June 2013 | Conor

‘I’m sick of fucking idiots saying I can’t sing.’ Liam Gallagher recently hit out at critics of his vocal abilities and stated that this new Beady Eye release will make said detractors eat their words. The result is a fairly experimental record from the headline machine motor mouth and his band mates. In an attempt to win people over Liam deliberately used no effects on the album’s vocals, giving a raw view of his inimitable vocal style.

2011’s Different Gear, Still Speeding was met with muted acclaim, and BE cannot really be considered a progression in any terms. Despite the best attempts of producer Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, BE comes across as somewhat a lazy, uninspired attempt at best. The album is full of promise, promise which never manages to reach its potential.

Liam may have put a great deal into showcasing his vocals, but perhaps this effort could have been put to better use by breathing life into the flat, banal guitar, or the pedestrian drumming which accompany Liam. The album kicks off with Flick of the Finger, the first song from the album to be released. Laden with horns and an endlessly repeating chord pattern this track does little to dispel the notion that Beady Eye is just a poor continuation of Oasis in their latter day form.

What has also continued is Liam's bitterness towards Noel. The famously warring brothers have never shyed away from the limelight, and Liam takes his chance to fit a few (not so) subtle digs at his brother withing the record, most notable on the 7 minute track 'Don't Brother Me' with lyrics like 'Sick of all your lying, skimming and you crying.'

The best records are ones that surprise the listener with unexpected turns, something which BE lacks in entirety. Beady Eye seem to have found their comfort zone, and even though you sense they have indeed tried to add variation, they fail to escape from under the thick veil of triteness and predictability.

5/10
