Indie Artist of the Month - Capital Cities

Indie | Tuesday 4th June 2013 | Alex

I’m a little bit surprised it’s not Vampire Weekend, too. Thing is, Capital Cities are new – ‘Modern Vampires of the City’ was great but relieving, not exciting (and I wrote about VW for ‘Album of the Month’). Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian are Capital Cities – an indie pop duo from L.A.

It’s obvious, really, that as time passes more genres are available to bend, and Capital Cities bend a lot of genres. Their debut ‘In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery’ certainly does. Track 5 is ‘Center Stage’, it’s as discoey as anything and just so Daft Punk – that must be pretty huge, right? If there’s room to strut, they do – Joey Ramone’s insistent yelp is imitated alongside that sort of funk where they wag their finger at you.

Andre 3000’s on ‘Farrah Fawcett Hair’, which is halfway between Outkast and the Spyro soundtrack, and ‘Love Away’ is a really, really poppy one. Actually, it’s a bit hysterical, like a serial killer at a tea party. I can’t say anything bad about ‘Capital Cities’. I suppose there might be some good things I can’t say, but then again, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ is no good at a rave, is it?
