Arctic Monkeys, Suck It And See- Review Indie | Monday 6th June 2011 | Osh Rarely does a band or artist of any description explode on to the music scene in quite the way Arctic Monkeys did in 2006 with their debut LP ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’. A mere five years later the band are back with their cheekily named fourth record ‘Suck IT And See’. Fans of the band were reportedly concerned upon hearing album taster ‘Brick By Brick’ in March this year, as the song itself features very basic pop melodies as well as extremely repetititive lyrical content. However any worries that the Monkey’s were playing it easy were dispelled when current single ‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ dropped in May. Featuring Turner’s trademark quit wit as well as a heavy guitar riff the track was a timely return to form and the previously mentioned ‘Brick By Brick’ proved to be little more than a red herring from the playful northerners. Stand out moments from the record include ‘She’s Thunderstorms’, ‘The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala’, and ‘Library Pictures’, the first track of which immediately hits the listener hard, with Jamie Cook’s Marr esque jangly guitars providing the songs foundations. The track’s direct yet intriguing melody contrasts Turner’s complex and well constructed lyrics perfectly and it provides a fitting snapshot of the album, and in doing so sets the tone for what’s to come from this fine collection of work provided by one of Britain’s biggest and most relevant bands.
