Suzy Menkes loves fashion, not the circus.

The fashion editor of The International Herald Tribune, Suzy Menkes, from the page of her New York Times T Magazine blog discusses the direction that the fashion world is taking , especially the circus that can be observed before each fashion show outside the venue.
Not only it is hard to get into the fashion show venues because of the amount of photographers crowding outside, but you also have to do the slalom between the so-called fashion bloggers who are competing to see who is dressed the most extravagant or who will pose for photographers of the street style.
A concept that I have in common with the famous British journalist, as I get stuck myself in the crowd outside the TopShop runway at Tate Modern during London Fashion Week.
Tons of photographers all ran together from side to side, to all take the same photo of a beautiful girl wearing the trends of the season (of course a different one from the outfit worn just few hours before at another show).
The ridiculous thing is that many of these people, who are photographed outside the fashion shows, then do not actually get in the venue. They go there just to be photographed and increase their reputation as fashionistas, runways after runways.
Who are they? No one.
As Suzy Menkes wrote, there is a loss of the authenticity from expressing an opinion on a fashion show or a fashion designer , and in the centre there is no longer fashion but the people themmselves:
Adhering to the time-honored journalistic rule that reporters don’t take gifts (read: bribes), I am stunned at the open way bloggers announce which designer has given them what. There is something ridiculous about the self-aggrandizement of some online arbiters who go against the mantra that I was taught in my earliest days as a fashion journalist: “It isn’t good because you like it; you like it because it’s good.” Slim chance of that idea catching on among the fashion bloggers. Whether it is the sharp Susie Bubble or the bright Tavi Gevinson, judging fashion has become all about me: Look at me wearing the dress! Look at these shoes I have found! Look at me loving this outfit in 15 different images!
