Ones to watch: Tribes

Indie | Tuesday 19th February 2013 | Thisbe

Camden four-piece Tribes have gone undeservedly unnoticed in the mainstream indie listings thus far. However this is set to be short lived, as their fresh album Wish To Scream is ready to pre-order for 20th May. Sounding like a decidedly more upbeat soprano Casablancas, singer Johnny Lloyd has the air of a tabloid rock hero in the making about him. And the rest of the band certainly looks the part too.

However, I’m certainly not suggesting that the prospective female fanbase they’re going to gather should be the sole shallow reason for checking this lot out. They have an incredible sound. Just on the right side of pop, and clawing kudos with their lo fi output, Tribes already have some really memorable tracks under their belts. So when performing at the Roundhouse in London on 29th May, I’m hoping they give lots of credit to ‘old’ favourites. “Sappho” is a sticky sweet indie confection, a British version of The Rambles’ “I Just Wanna Sleep With You”. Whilst “We Were Children” cleverly references their audience, ‘we were children in the mid nineties’.

Tribes are rehashing and making good the punk, indie and grunge vibes of influence. They’re the One Direction for alternative twenty-somethings, not exactly a complete breath of fresh air, but a chocolate-mint scoop in your 99.

Seriously go and see this band.
