The East Coast hits back
CZARFACE is the new collaborative album out today from Wu- Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck, and 7L + Esoteric. This album has the potential for great things, not only due to its lead acts but what they’ve got to say about it, ‘we are CZARFACE because they know our faces and they know us for being dope rhyme suppliers, like Tony Montana we are known for our balls and our word; lyrically we will conquer the world and everything in it.’ Not surprisingly they’ve got some big guests on board. These include massive names like Ghostface Killah, Action Bronson, Roc Marciano and Vinnie Paz.
I’ve been listening to this album all morning and can officially confirm that the East Coast is back and they mean business. With the recent success of West Coast rappers like Kendrick Lamar, it was the turn of the East Coast to throw down the gauntlet and show us what they’ve got. Well what they’ve got they’ve got it in spades. Using the classic 90’s East Coast blueprint they have created an album that is not only a return to that sound, but innovative enough to bring the sound into the 21st Century. ‘Savagely Attack’, featuring Ghostface Killah, is a highlight but it would be unfair to single out a track from this album, it all deserves hearing. On top of that, the album has some of the best artwork I’ve seen in a long time and serves as enough of an incentive for you to get the vinyl bought without even caring about the music.
Just like Wu-Tang Clan were all about strong beats and the art of emceeing, so is Czarface. Each track jumps at you and punches you in the face, or as Ghostface tells in the aforementioned track, ‘attacks like a n**** on bath salts...’ It is a dark and aggressive album that takes no prisoners. Just check out the video for their first single and you’ll see what I mean.
