Is this the ultimate supergroup?

Indie | Thursday 10th January 2013 | David

Following the creation of his documentary on the Sound City recording studios, the line-up for Dave Grohl’s latest collaborative act has been revealed.

The Foo Fighters frontman must be one of the busiest guys in the music business at the moment. His main band may be taking a break, but that isn’t stopping Dave Grohl, who is working with Queens of the Stone Age on their latest album. Now he has another project going: Sound City Players, a group of musicians featured on his documentary on the Californian studio where Nirvana recorded Nevermind in 1991.

“Supergroup” doesn’t quite do justice to the huge cast of musicians involved: the line-up is extensive and is littered with massive names. Grohl is used to playing with the likes of Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett, but a host of other contributors will also be involved. Alain Johannes, Chris Goss, Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks, Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk are all taking part, plus many others.

Sound City Players are set to grace the stage at the Sundance Film Festival on 18th January this year. The documentary itself, described by Grohl as “a film about America's greatest unsung recording studio”, will also premiere at the Utah festival, which runs from 17th-27th January. As well as the artists already mentioned, it features Trent Reznor, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Pixies’ Frank Black – so both the film and the band should be pretty damn awesome.
