Nature Boy Swag: Antwon
Thursday 13th December 2012 | Jake
Antwon is a rapper coming out of the Bay Area in the USA and has been blowing up on the internet in recent times.
I have to admit I missed his first mixtape and heard about him the same time the video for his track 'Helicopter' came out, but since then I've been bumping his music daily. He has a fresh style and spits over some of the best beats around at the moment.
He's got three mixtapes out at the moment: My Westside Horizon, Fantasy Beds and End of Earth. All of which are available on his bandcam - Fantasy Beds and End of Earth are free, and My Westside Horizon is $5 (about £3, definitely worth the money)
Download his mixtapes here: http://antwon.bandcamp.com/
As well as being a beast of a rapper he can also paint and was the bass player in a San Francisco punk band... he definitely has a punk/DIY approach to his rap music, as well releasing his music and merch independently, which is something that I've been noticing more and more in hip hop recently - maybe as a rebellion against the control of major labels.
He is affiliated with Dark Sister, Lil Ugly Mane, Himself the Majestic and Cities Aviv among others. Himself the Majestic is also a part of the crew Nature Boy Gang along with some other artists and friends.
He is a self-confessed lover of punk, drum and bass and 90's RnB, the latter influence can be heard in the hook to the Dj Sex Play produced 'Diamonds and Pearls' off Antwons most recent release 'End of Earth'.
I would definitely advise you to download his mixtapes and get yourself involved with his music, I assure you that you will enjoy what you find. Hopefully it won't be too long before he does some shows in the UK.
Check the videos for 'Helicopter' (from Fantasy Beds) and 'Living Every Dream' (from End of Earth) below.
