Raekwon The Chef
RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 8th November 2012 | Osh
Raekwon. Raekwon the Chef. Shallah Raekwon.
Whatever alias you know him by, if you know hip-hop, you know who he is regardless of the name. This hip-hop heavyweight is one ninth of the immortal Wu Tang Clan, who also has his own notable solo career.
Born Corey Woods on January 12, 1970, Raekwon joined the Wu Tang in 1992 and together they debuted in 1993 with Enter The Wu Tang: 36 Chambers. Enter The Wu contained hip-hop classics such as 'Protect Ya Neck' and 'C.R.E.A.M'.
In 1995, Raekwon released his first solo album Only Built For Cuban Linx…, on which Ghostface Killa featured heavily and was largely produced by RZA - though it wasn't as widely received as bandmate Method Man's Tical. Still it has become known as one of hip hop's underground classics and about.com has named Reakwon one of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time.
In a Wax Poetic interview, Raekwon said of his rhymes: "I grew up in the street, so I talked about the shit I knew and saw. We did the hustlin’ thing, we did the crime thing; we did all the things that made us feel like mobsters or Mafiosos in some way."
Raekwon's subsequent releases, whether they received mixed or rave reviews, have all gone on to become classics, a nod to when hip-hop still had a message.
Raekwon The Chef, we salute you.
