Superstar skateboards to be auctioned by Tony Hawk Foundation

Other | Friday 21st September 2012 | Osh

Music legends have penned some of their lyrics on pros’ used boards in the name of skating charity.

The idea was started by all-round musician Ben Harper, who sits on the Tony Hawk Foundation’s board of governors. He approached several artists in order to set up a charity auction that is exciting skate fans everywhere. Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and Harper himself are among the musicians involved in the scheme, although arguably the most noteworthy contribution is that of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys. Yauch was very enthusiastic, and wrote the lyrics to ‘Bodhisattva Vow’ on three boards – used by Bucky Lasek – just two months before his death after a long battle with cancer.

Hawk himself donated the board written on by McCartney. The Beatle opted to write the lyrics to ‘Blackbird’, and, whilst Hawk was hoping for a song off the first record he bought, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, he laughed off the idea that he was disappointed, jovially stating: "What was I going to say – send it back and say, 'Rejected'?" Further stars, including Elton John, are expected to take part in the auction, which will benefit skate parks in under-funded and indigent areas.

The auction will take place online on 29th November.
