No record label? Ben Folds Five ‘Do It Anyway’… with puppets

Indie | Tuesday 18th September 2012 | Osh

Having reformed last year, the trio from North Carolina have got straight down to business with some new material.

The Sound of the Life of the Mind, the latest offering from Ben Folds Five and their first for a massive 13 years, was officially released today, having been available digitally since August. This followed a remarkably successful online crowdfunding campaign due to the band being unsigned – within a week of going live, it had climbed to 200 per cent. Clearly, even after a lengthy absence, there’s still a lot of love for Ben Folds Five.

Additionally, a video for the seventh track on the album, ‘Do It Anyway’ was released yesterday. Now, Ben Folds Five are known for their humour, but not many people could have predicted them to collaborate with the cast of – wait for it – Fraggle Rock. Yes, the video involves puppets. No, we’re not quite sure why. The song itself is upbeat, happy and carefree – much like the band itself. The bassline is ridiculously complex in places, and the piano is reminiscent of something you might find in a jazzy mental asylum. Weirdly, the whole thing works pretty well. Will Kermit and co. feature on the next track? We can only hope.
