With two top football clubs, rising cultural status, and a ‘distinct’ local accent, Manchester can now add something else to its list of achievements: the piracy capital of the UK.
An in-depth report from monitoring service Musicmetric, on illegal downloading has found that Manchester has the highest rates of illegal download activity per capita, with file-sharing in the UK reaching close to three and a half million songs in just the first half of this year.
Following behind Manchester in the list of most illegal downloads is Nottingham and Southampton, with London at the bottom of the list in 20th place.
According to the IFPI, which represents the recording industry worldwide, piracy is the biggest danger to the digital music business.
