Tashaki Miyaki Interview

Tuesday 24th July 2012 | Osh
Tashaki Miyaki is a quirky two- piece band from Los Angeles who are bringing a dark, haunting vibe to the UK. The duo, with a rather distinctive name, are set to become big within the indie world so keep your eyes and ears peeled. They are currently on tour until the end of July so you better check them out while you still can. Their album Tashaki Miyaki released last November is definitely worth taking a look at. We caught up with them for a quick interview before their gig in Brick Lane’s Rough Trade Records store.
TGN: So you’re based in LA ?
Lucy: Yeah
TGN: Okay, so tell us about you’re music.
Lucy: (laughs) That’s a hard question, we like to call it a dreamy, therapy, easy-listening that you could put on and feel good. It’s silky and doesn’t offend anybody, it’s what you want to put on when you want to just hang out and feel good.
Dora: It’s chill out music
Lucy: It’s chill out music, exactly.
TGN: Okay that sounds pretty cool actually, you’ve sold it to me already and I’m going to be here at seven.
OLucy: (laughs) Yes, be here at seven.
TGN: Yes I will, so you’re performing here. Where else are you performing?
Lucy: Well we played secret garden party already which was crazy and yesterday we had the day off so we did touristy things and today we’re here. Tomorrow we’re playing at the castle hotel in Manchester and then we are playing at the boiler room in Guildford and then Stereo in York.
Dora: We’re playing at Birthdays!
Lucy: Yes, Birthdays at Dalston on Thursday.
TGN: Okay that’s pretty cool.
Lucy: Yes it’s a great place.
TGN: Yes, So what kind of touristy things have you done in London ?
Lucy: Well I really wanted to see Buckingham Palace!
TGN: Yeh? And did you like it ?
Lucy: Yes I really liked it and we saw the changing of the guards. The best thing we did was we walked by Big Ben and we went to Westminster Abbey but they were closed for tourists but were having a service. So they had this choir singing and it was one of the most beautiful experiences ever. I mean we don’t have anything like that in California so just being there and hearing the voices of the choir was so moving and we were seriously impressed with it.
TGN: So did you all the other touristy stuff, like the London Eye ?
Lucy: No we didn’t go to the London Eye because I think I would be too claustrophobic because I heard that it goes really slow and that you’re up there for an hour and it’s all closed up.
TGN: Well it’s about 40 minutes.
Lucy: Well that’s a long time (laughs)
Dora: (laughs) I have a little bit of a anxiety thing in a closed space
TGN: (laughs) Okay well maybe it was a good idea not to go on the Eye.
Lucy: (laughs) Yes it’s not the best idea so we decided to see it from afar.
TGN: (laughs) Yes that’s good enough. So once you’ve done all these shows, what are you planning to do next ?
Lucy: So we have all these shows in UK then were going to Toronto to open for Florence and the Machine which will be fun. Then we’re heading to New York city to do a couple of shows there and then we go back to LA.
TGN: Brilliant! So here’s a quick question, what UK artists do you listen to?
Lucy: Well UK artists…we listen to The Beatles and Yuck. We’re good friends with Daniel from the Yuck, he took us to this great place to have fish and chips.
TGN: Oh did he? Did you get mushy peas and everything?
Lucy: Mushy peas and everything! We had mushy peas and the pickled eggs and onions.
TGN: Yeh? And did you like it?
Lucy: Well it’s not really what I’m used to (laughs) but it’s great to try once in my life.
TGN: Yes. So what bands and musicians inspire you?
Lucy: Well Uncle Neil, Neil Young. We call him Uncle Neil (laughs) and Gillian Ralston and Dave Rawlings.
Dora: From people that I’ve seen live, they are the best singers around. Their harmony singing is amazing.
TGN: Brilliant. Thanks for doing this and we will be back here at seven to see you perform live.
Lucy: Yes see you guys at seven!
