Independent rapper Tech N9ne has earned a Gold Plaque for sales exceeding 500,000 copies of his Caribou Lou record.
This tune is a big one and we've been big into it ever since a few years ago when we spotted it in that Alpha Dog movie. TBH, we think the song is actually the only highlight of that teenage-California-wannabe-gangster flick, so it's about damn time it gets proper commercial recognition. Long overdue, but Tech N9ne is after all an independent artist, which means he doesn't have a huge corporation shoving music down the throats of millions of people on his behalf.
His actual marketing expenditure was $0. In the artist's own words: "We put no promotion out or nothing. It was just on our website and on iTunes. Then the motherfucker came out the first week and it was #1 [Independent] record in the country. We had no idea. No promotion whatsoever. Nothing."
Now, for the song: If you haven't heard it yet, it's about the meanest, craziest cocktail out there - Caribou Lou (hence the title, according to Captain Obvious). Check the lyrics for the ingredients - all we will say at this point is that Bacardi 151 Rum contains 75% alcohol by volume, which makes it pretty fucking hardcore. Just so you know what you're dealing with, because the record itself is no different than the devilish beverage it glorifies. Have a listen below:
