How To Break All The Rules Like Rita Ora

Monday 16th July 2012 | Osh

Rita Ora has jumped onto the scene and captured us, not particularly with her song writing prowess, RIP coming about two years too late to be innovative, but with her style. Her ability to mix salt n pepper tomboy attitude with drag queen fabulous and come out looking, well, fashion forward is worthy of applause.

Rita Ora’s refreshing style comes after the decade long war of the ‘natural’ look vs you’ve been tangoed. To get tickets for the front row of catwalk shows you first have to convince the world of your ‘natural’ beauty, Beyonce has found the perfect shade of blonde where she might just convince the naive it’s not dyed, and fashion icon Alexa Chung’s only apparent makeup altercations is that slick of black liner. While Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have taken stands against the past decade’s ‘natural’ look, Rita Ora’s rebellion is somehow wearable, though feel free to wear a lobster on your head if you want.

Ora wears her ‘fakery’ as a badge of honour, from her bleached locks to her coloured in brows. This ‘I don’t really look like this, and what’ style is pulled off with the subconscious message underneath the slick of raspberry lipstick, black brows and gold chains, that: ‘bitch this is expensive.’

Ora takes the major fashion no nos: gaudy eighties gold jewellery, beanie hats, boy tops and even PVC and somehow makes it work, each banned fashion item cancels each other out, to look fashionable.

So here are the Rita Rules to try yourself:

  • Chunky Jewellery always with a laid back boy tee.
  • Beanie hats no longer for bad hair days, and always with loose curls.
  • Crop tops with combat trousers.
  • Wacky Sunglasses with a slick of red lipstick.
  • And always, always, always: fill in your brows.
