Spirit of London Awards Nominees Attend Downing Street Reception

London, 19th September 2011:  Community heroes from across the UK were honoured with a reception at Downing Street this afternoon, as part of the third Spirit of London Awards, the year-round outreach and legacy project created by the Damilola Taylor Trust. In addition to the Awards nominees, many of this year’s Awards show’s stellar line-up of musical artists and celebrity supporters attended, joining the Prime Minister in celebrating and congratulating the true face of Britain’s youth.

The Prime Minister’s guests included the shortlist of nominees for this year’s Awards show, with previous winners (SOLA Ambassadors); the musical artists appearing at the Royal Albert Hall on October 10th, including Tinchy Stryder, Dionne Bromfield, Diversity and host Stacey Solomon; SOLA supporters Rio Ferdinand, Jermain Defoe, and Olympians Christine Ohuruogu and Tasha Danvers, plus the young Spirit of London Awards Foundation members who have created both the unique Awards Show and outreach programmes.

Not only against the backdrop of recent social unrest, but through the whole year, SOLA nominees have all continued to display passionate resolve to counter the negative perception of Britain’s urban youth through positive action. Whether through music, sport, education, entrepreneurship, art or social enterprise, the nominees have persisted in sharing their time and skills, building strong communities and in helping disadvantaged people overcome the challenges they face.

Rt Hon David Cameron MP said:
“In the Spirit of London Awards we celebrate the best of the capital's young people.  When I go round the country I meet young people more hopeful, more energetic, more fired up to change their neighbourhood and change the world than any in my generation. Spirit of London is a fantastic example of that. It is a powerful antidote to what we saw in the summer, demonstrating to the whole country that there are young people doing great things that we can all be proud of. I want to thank the young people who organise the awards and all the nominees for the fantastic things they're doing."

Tinchy Stryder, headlining the Awards’ music acts, said
“It is great to see young people getting such high profile recognition for doing good work in their local communities and I am looking forward to sharing the stage with them at the Royal Albert Hall.
