Festival Review: Outbreak

Taking place over the Halloween weekend, Outbreak aimed to inject some underground cool and some electronic pats into the city and offer rave kids something to get stuck into without having to travel around the country.
It seems to have worked, because as soon as we arrived at the venue, the atmosphere was thronging and hoards of happy people were already getting down. The said venue is in the Ricoh Arena, which had six stages spread over three levels. Outside there was a glut of extra fun from fairground rides to food stalls, which all made for a proper if not unlikely party paradise.
The Friday offerings were largely drum and bass heavy, with dubstep along the way, from acts like Sigma, Ms Dynamite and the legendary David Rodigan, who won an MBE for his services to reggae, dropping big bad rides all throughout his set. The sound system was truly put through its paces during David's set and the floor shook to his every new tune.
In a room next door, amazing visuals were adding another dimension to the beats dropped by bass talent Hannah Wants. After her, came UK chart topping and dance pop cross over act Gorgon City. Their polished house and garage sounds were well swung, big, bold and full of bass. Elsewhere in the night, the Defected room offered lots of classic and contemporary house bangers from DJs like Sonny Fodera and kept people raving till sun up as a result.
Day two took more of an underground house and techno route, with Ibiza star Patrick Topping doing his thing to an increasingly busy floor. After that, house champ and Tribal Sessions main man Darius, made us all sweat to his meaty selections. Then, in Room 2, Paul Woolford played to a packed out crowd, dropping weird bass, pummelling techno and plenty in between.
The tunes just kept on coming with the likes of Heidi, techno temptress Nina Kraviz and DC10 hero Matthias Tanvzmann all playing great sets that offered lots of variation. Seth Troller was a highlight for many, playing with his usual sense of off kilter charm, having people pushed up against the barriers in pleasure. Coventry has never seen an orgasm of dance as big as this before, but because of the success of Outbreak, we predict you will see more of it in the future.
