Belle and Sebastian release a new single!

Indie | Thursday 6th November 2014 | Ben

This week Belle and Sebastian have released ‘The Party Line’, a single from their upcoming ninth studio album, Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance. And, by Belle and Sebastian standards, it’s their most ‘danceable’ track. Whether I would dance to it with the same level of committed sweaty passion as I would to ‘Sukie In The Graveyard’ or ‘White Collar Boy’ is a different - and private - matter.

At first the track is a strange listen. Because of its dance ready nature it feels very produced, like a remix that should be on Third Eye Centre. It is also a completely different sound from anything off their last studio album, Write About Love. That’s most likely down do a change in production; Ben H. Allen III, who has worked with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, Cee Lo, and MIA, takes over from Tony Hoffer, producer of Write About Love and The Life Pursuit.

The slow and nebulous sounds of ‘Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John’ and ‘I Didn’t See It Coming’ have been replaced by – well, ‘the party line’. There is a pumping beat that is just begging to be moved to, and the funky guitar and clapping can’t help but get people involved.

A very different sound compared to the rest of their body of work and that is by no means a bad thing. It feels like the band is constantly evolving its sound and never stuck in one place. A great first single of what promises to be an exciting new album!
