Indie Band To Watch: Palace

As Leo Wyndham sings the ‘bitter, bitter, bitter’ in the chorus of the EP’s lead track, ‘Bitter’, you can’t help but be reminded of a certain Mancunian’s cry ’Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’. The soaring vocals, the sorrowful sound, the pleading lyrics all combine beautifully to evoke a certain melancholy in the listener.
This moody feeling pervades the whole EP, not least generated by the hazy sound of the blues guitar. ‘Ocean’s Deep’, the third track on the EP, is almost hypnotic in its gentle rocking sound. Wyndham’s soaring and echoing vocals guide the track calmly through a haze of nostalgia all the while building up the end’s stormy crescendo before slowly fading away again. In ‘Veins’ Palace play up the bluesy feel with soft riffs that don’t feel indulgent or just for the sake of it. It’s rather a mournful instrumental compliment to Wyndham’s own sorrowful vocals.
The EP’s final track, the acoustic ‘Lost In The Night’, at two minutes four seconds is its shortest by quite a way. It’s a more holistic, intimate sound. It’s a less despondent, more serene sound that we wish would never end.
Lost In The Night is a consistently beautiful and haunting debut record from the London quartet and are one band to definitely keep an eye on in the near future.
