Throwing Snow, AKA Ross Tones is a London-based producer who has been releasing EPs and pushing the boundaries of electronic music since 2007. This however, might be his biggest year yet - he's just dropped his debut LP Mosaic on Fabric label Houndstooth. It's an ambitious collection of tracks which aim to fuse "elements of folk and real instruments combined with drum funk, electronica and samples", according to a press release.
Guest vocalists Py, Adda Kaleh, and Kid A amongst others, provide a more human, radio-friendly touch. Tones supported Bonobo on his European tour and there is evidence of these similarities, yet Throwing Snow productions have a somewhat colder, darker and more machinistic overtone. The lead single from the LP, The Tempest, was a standout moment in Bonobo's BBC Essential Mix.
Tones also has numerous other project - three record labels, Left Blank, A Future Without and Snowfall, as well as a collaboration with vocalist Augustus Ghost and his own brother, under the names Snow Ghosts and Vellico respectively. Even with this packed schedule Tones found time to play a standout set at Sonar festival and will soon be playing at Lovebox - expect to hear a lot more from this growing UK producer over the next year.
