Single Review: Arctic Monkeys, 'Arabella'

Indie | Friday 14th March 2014 | James

The fifth and final single released off last year’s behemoth record ‘AM’, Arabella is a slick, 70s flavoured indie rock anthem. Going in the same steady tempo, thumping beat vein as Do I Wanna Know?, it surges between a spaced-out, pondering verse into a swaggering, Sabbath-aping chorus, as Turner snarls with top lip curled; ‘It's much less picturesque without her catching the light/The horizon tries but it's just not as kind on the eyes’ Indeed, Arabella finds Turner in top, seductive form lyrically, showcasing the intense focus and vivid imagery that has become a staple of his songwriting; ‘Arabella's got some interstellar-gator skin boots/And a helter skelter 'round her little finger, and I ride it endlessly’ as he croons for the stylish daydreamer Arabella. After the likes of One For The Road and Do I Wanna Know?, it completes a set of stellar singles released from AM and is a suitably high quality closing release after a defining year for the Monkeys.
