Hailing from the Scottish boarders, but currently studying in Edinburgh, Georgia Gordon is an up and coming singer songwriter, with a guitar and lyrical poetry to accompany her. She is only 18 years old, but is already making a name for herself. After gigging in America, (and with plans to return later this year) she has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in Radio Forth’s One to Watch last month, there is a good chance that her future is looking very bright indeed.
Georgia describes her music as a mix of folk, indie and acoustic pop, which seems quite a lot to be getting on with, but the result is just simple, lovely songs which sort of make you want to be sitting in a field with your friends on a summers evening, or I also imagine a sort of film, maybe the characters are driving around some mountainous road at dusk, and a huge revelation has just occurred.... wherever you need to be to enjoy Georgia’s music, it doesn’t really matter, as long as you are able to hear it, and appreciate her beautiful vocal performance.
Her sound is similar in someways to her influences, (KT Tunstall, Paolo Nutini, Angus and Julia Stone, I Blame Coco and Bombay Bicycle Club) but in other ways, she is very unique, creating songs whose melodies stand out, and writing lyrics which make you understand why she preferred to listen to poems instead of bedtime stories when she was little. Have a listen to her Soundcloud here (https://soundcloud.com/georgiagordonmusic), (I highly recommend you accompany it with a cup of Earl Grey or, at the very least, a Chamomile tea), or here is her Youtube channel which is full of her live performances (http://www.youtube.com/user/georgiagordonmusic/videos)
But enough from me rabbiting on, how about we have a listen from the lady herself?
Can you remember the moment when you wanted to be a singer?
I remember performing 2 or 3 of my songs for the first time on stage when I never thought that much of them and getting so many incredible responses from complete strangers but also from a few musicians who I really looked up to. That was when I kind of realised I wanted to pursue it further. When people give me good feedback, meaningful feedback, it always pushes me further, even now it really boosts my confidence and inspires me to do better and keep going.
If you could duet with anyone in the world, who would it be?
They're nowhere near my genre of music but I'd love to do a crazy collaboration with The Black Keys or Arctic Monkeys. I think that would be so cool. Failing that, however, collaborating with a big inspirations like KT Tunstall or Paolo Nutini would be incredible.
What is your favourite song?
That's really tough! I really couldn't answer that straight. There was once a small band from London who weren't about for very long but they were my favourite band for a long time and one of their songs was the most played on my iPod. It was Checkmate by London Blackmarket (they ended up changing their name to Casso). Uummannaq Song by KT Tunstall is another song I love by an artist I am a huge fan of or anything by The Black Keys but listing all my favourite songs would take a while!
What was the last album you bought?
Umm, I think it was Like Clockwork... by Queens of the Stone Age. Such and incredible album! Or it might have been Yeezus by Kanye...
If you were on a desert island, what would be the three things you'd bring?
Does a phone count? I know that's boring but kind of crucial. A guitar probably to keep me sane and magazines, lots of magazines... Nothing that useful tbh. If I'm allowed a human being instead of an inanimate object I'd want my boyfriend Isaac to be there with me.
Georgia could be that artist then when she makes it big, you can be the person who said "Oh, I knew her aaaaages ago, way before any of you". And lets be honest, we all love being that person.
