We check out the monsters in Mayday Parade's closet

Indie | Thursday 17th October 2013 | Gemma

Mayday Parade is one of my favourite bands, so naturally I was excited to listen to their new album. Although they rarely disappoint, I'm sad to say that their album 'Monsters In The Closet' is probably their weakest. I don't want to be one of those people who says, "oh their older stuff is so much better than their newer stuff," because I don't believe that's true. Their self-titled album (their previous release) is not only my favourite Mayday Parade album, but one of my favourite albums in general.

So what happened here? Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad - there are some great songs like 'Even Robots Need Blankets', great in its title alone, and their highlight track '12 Through 15', which, through similar melodies and lyrical snippets, they have connected to their previous song 'Call Me Hopeless But Not Romantic'. However, songs like 'Demons' and 'Sorry, Not Sorry' echo generic pop-punk sounds and lack the otherwise typical Mayday Parade uniqueness. Generally, its a good album. That is to say, the good outweighs the bad and it is well worth a listen.
