Reasons for Lauren Mayberry being applauded.

Indie | Monday 7th October 2013 | Alex

Last week, Lauren Mayberry, of Chvrches, wrote a fairly impassioned article damning the hordes of misogynistic abuse she receives as the singer and main focal point of the band, even if she wouldn’t say it herself. Some of the abuse that she listed was pretty disgusting, others simply laughable. The snippet that piqued my interest the most was the articulate gentleman who proclaimed that he was going to give her “…anal and you will love it you tw*t lol”. Outstanding use of “lol” there, sir.

Since this article was published the question this has puzzled me the most is this; what is it that motivates men to write such a foul and depraved nonsense simply because they’re protected by a computer screen? Miley, I’m looking at you.

While Mayberry’s article speaks with a reasoned and thought provoking voice which probably owes to her being educated to MA level, recently we have had Miley Cyrus talking with her body. However, in the case of Sinead O’Connor we’ve seen her talking ludicrously. What can’t help Mayberry’s case for equality is seeing a girl 5 years her junior doing exactly what many corners of the internet have already chastised her for. No need to beat a dead horse, is there?

In relation to what was written by the Chvrches member though, it becomes particularly confusing when these comments are directed at the songstress that doesn’t ask for this attention. When faced with the stimulus from one corner of the music industry of a 20 year old girl swinging from a metal ball and offering up a healthy amount of fellatio to a hammer, being completely opposed with a considered approach at the other end of the spectrum, it’s baffling that in 2013 this is still deemed acceptable.

At the time of writing, “Wrecking Ball” had a total of 198,277,752 views on YouTube while Mayberry’s article had 22,499 Facebook shares to accompany 2,189 tweets of said piece. This means that the girl treating a sledgehammer like a twister ice lolly has received 8,031 times the views that the Master’s student has had. Now, obviously Cyrus has been in the limelight all her life but I’m sure that any rational human being would rather have those figures reversed in an ideal world. Lest we forget, this is not a perfect world. Arsenal top the table, money doesn’t grow on trees, and Mayberry’s article will largely remain undiscovered while Cyrus grows ever more outlandish.

Lauren Mayberry’s stance is certainly something that should be overtly applauded on the whole. She has done a great justice to her cause by presenting something tangible for people to associate with this grotesque behaviour from the general public. Mayberry’s name will not be spoken about as much as Cyrus’, but for the time being let’s praise what was a thought provoking moment that will hopefully raise a few questions and force some of those who think it’s ok to say these things to keep their comments to the pub.
