Soulitaire shares new single chock-full of harmony and jazz

Indie | Wednesday 27th September 2017 | Lilly

Soulitaire is the sum of all the experiences Martin Rotheneder has had in the past. And there’s plenty to draw from since I Believe In Rainbows will be the tenth release with his own music in both solo and collaborative projects since 2004.

Even though he managed to make a name for himself in Austria’s music scene, he decided to start from scratch again in 2015, tear everything down to get to the core of his music with Soulitaire.

Soulitaire’s Martin Rotheneder had quite an early introduction to music. He picked up both guitar and drums at age six, playing along to afro-funk grooves and fingerstyle guitar.

While he was subsequently educated on classical guitar up to a masters degree in jazz guitar at Gustav Mahler Conservatory in Vienna, the drums had always been more of a love affair than a serious relationship. It wasn’t until starting Soulitaire that he managed to combine the two by playing just one single instrument: his acoustic guitar.

Taking his cues from late 60s Beatles, 70s Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny Group, 90s Keziah Jones up to contemporary pop and soul, Soulitaire manages to pull on your heart strings with his sliding guitar technique, releasing a softness in the strumming and a natural loop of hand beats- bass vibrating off his instrument. His sound breathes off a well-balanced weight between the classic and the contemporary, evoking a charm in the relationship between the vocals and harmony.

Soulitaire says about 'New Breed’s' backstory: "The song is about hope. A look through all the anxiety and desperation right into a time when those deliberate and warmhearted people that are young adults today will become the next architects of our world. They will look back to learn and look forward to build upon those experiences. And then there will again be hard times to struggle with and again someone will be there to learn to make it better. Because that’s how life is: Waves. Quite beautiful actually, if you watch them from a distance."
