Probably the hottest topic in hip-hop right now is the Kendrick Lamar verse on Big Sean’s track, ‘Control’.
“I feel like he’s one of the most talented people of our generation” Rocky said when interviewed by Funkmaster Flex who was not beating around the bush at all. “I aint got nothing but love – we aint trippin’.”
He continued to show support and no malice towards the verse, in which he was named as one of Kendrick’s competitors that he aims to overthrow, “rap is supposed to be an outlet to express and say anything you want.” Despite this, he was quick to laugh at the proclamation of Kendrick being the self-confessed “King of New York!” “I could call myself the King of LA, at least I live there!”
There was however a bit more of a sour feeling in the camp at A$AP Ferg replied to Flex’s question with the title of his response track, ‘What’s A King To A Lord’. He stayed fairly quiet throughout most of the interview which seemed to show he didn’t reflect the same feelings of Kendrick’s verse just being that of the “sport” Rocky spoke of, and he infact could be one of the people Flex and Rocky who spoke of being offended, simply because they weren’t mentioned.
Despite all the chat, all parties could agree that Kendrick has united the whole rap game in one way – he brought it back to the lyrics!
To date, just some artists who have released response to Kendrick’s ‘Control’ verse are: Joell Ortiz, B.O.B, Joe Budden, Lupe Fiasco, A$AP Ferg and Papoose. Check out the full interview here!
