Kendrick Lamar and the verse heard around the world

RnB/Hip Hop | Wednesday 14th August 2013 | Moses

Unless you've been living under a rock or in space for the last 2 days then you would've undoubtedly heard about Kendrick Lamar and the verse that shook the Hip Hop world. Monday night started as your typical weekday night, a few mixtapes dropped, French Montana announced he was putting Miley Cyrus on the 'Aint Worried Bout Nothin' remix and rapper Future declared he's girlfriend Ciara as "the one". Things took a turn when Big Sean dropped a record that was didn't make the final cut for he's upcoming Hall of Fame album due to sampling issues. The record titled "Control' featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica saw Kendrick deliver a ferocious verse packed with a range of metaphors, multi's and punchlines. However there are two parts of the verse which caught everyone's attention by proclaiming himself the King of New York whilst naming dropping other fellow rappers and declaring he wants to kill he's competition.

'Im Makaveli's offspring, I'm the King of New York"

I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhymin wit
But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Mills, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you niggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas
They dont wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas"

After the drop Twitter went into a frenzy with hip hop fans and fellow rapper commenting on the verse.......

I hear u loud and clear my nigga... @kendricklamar

The verse has seemed to spark two different reactions from rappers, some rapper seemed to embrace Kendrick's verse believing it was good for hip hop such as Bun B who tweeted "Every rapper is supposed to feel like Kendrick feels as far as wanting to murder niggas on the mic. That's why I wrote my "Murder" verse." and Tyga who tweeted "That kendrick verse crazy! I gotta get back on my own shi.ain’t gon lie I made so much $ I lost sum inspiration for music.#Inspired rite now"

However the verse also produced an entirely different response particularly from New York rappers who didn't appreciate Kendrick claiming himself as the king of New York such as Jim Jones who tweeted "we don't give a f*** about a king of ny and Maino who tweeted "my city don't' even love itself. So don't ask how a N**** from Cali could claim NY's Crown".

The range of reactions from different rappers have hip hop fans anticipating verbal responses  which many believe will lead to a bigger focus on great lyrics and more competition among rapper which many feel has been missing the last couple of years. Joell Ortiz from supergroup Slaughterhouse was the first to respond with he's own remix to the "Control" and many more are surely on the way so you definitely have to stay tuned for what should be a very interesting period in Hip Hop.
