Mumford & Son’s Exclusive Gig at The Garage, Islington

Words cannot describe Mumford & Son’s performance at the Garage Islington- but we’re going to try. Set in the intimate space of The Garage, Mumford & Sons gloriously played within a couple feet of the whole ‘audience,’ or as we would call the night, more of a hangout. With the heat rising, nerves were up to see the beloved band so close to the lucky competition winners. Following their grand performance at Glastonbury, the room was buzzing with a completely different vibe. The venue combined with the humble purpose of the show, constructed the perfect environment for the emotions to throb.

Xfm hosted this performance as a competition for a charity called War Child supporting children struck with a life in a war-zone environment. While entering the venue, audience members were encouraged to donate a couple of pounds to the charity- hardly the price to match the fantastic performance and incredible cause.

With a set including ‘Babel,’ ‘Little Lion Man,’ ‘White Blank Page,’ and ‘Roll Away’ Mumford & Sons played their hearts out allowing the audience to sing, dance, and cry along (oh, and sweat)! Marcus in his simple white shirt and hat belted his soul as well as played guitar and drums, with the other band members creating equal power. With the temperature rising and music continuing, along with the lovely cups of water floating around, the room became a harmonious community of song.

To top the already epic performance, the audience was teased into an incredible finale. Just as we thought the band was exiting the stage, the side door opened to welcome the band into the audience center- now it really turned into a hangout. Mumford & Sons gathered in the center of the space while the audience was asked to sit in a circle around them. With a campfire-like cheer, Mumford played unplugged versions of 'Dust Bowl Dance' and 'Sigh No More' without hesitating to tell the audience to shut up! But believe me they did, because when Mumford & Sons’ sweat is dripping on you as they beg to sing to your ears- you are basically willing to do anything.

The night ended with all feeling like it was hardly a performance, but more a dream, and not to mention the fulfillment of the dreams of the War Child children- we doubt another performance can match this!
