West Indies UK pageant contestants to raise money for Irma victims

Other | Saturday 16th September 2017 |

As the 2nd Annual Mr & Miss West Indies UK Pageant draws closer, the contestants are supporting West Indies citizens impacted by Hurricane Irma, which slammed the Caribbean on the 1st of September with 155-mile-an-hour winds.

The category 5 Hurricane left several dead and millions of dollars in damage to Islands across the West Indies, including Guadalupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. Most of the islands managed to avoid a direct hit from Hurricane Jose, but the storm still caused considerable damage to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

To assist in the relief effort, the Mr & Miss West Indies UK Pageant contestants are using their mandatory community service projects to raise funding for their respective causes. One pound from each project admission has been designated to be sent to the official commission’s hurricane relief fund.

“It is times like these when we need to unite as a people and live up to our motto of being a pageant with a purpose,” said Fiona Hewitt, founder of the Mr & Miss West Indies UK Pageant. “I am proud to see all of our representatives stepping in to bring much-needed aid to their home Islands. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the people who were affected by these terrible storms.”
