Harry Potter actress branded a 'hypocrite'

Other | Tuesday 7th March 2017 | Parmis

Emma Watson, Actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women has been criticised for her ‘un-feminist’ Vanity Fair cover.

The Vanity Fair cover, which shows Watson with her chest revealed has attracted a lot of media attention, and almost all of it is negative, many called the Harry Potter actress, who considers herself a feminist, a ‘hypocrite’ for the photo.

If feminism advocates the true equality of the sexes – more specifically, the political, economic and social equality of the sexes – then why would Emma Watson be a hypocrite?

If, as a celebrated liberal female, she consciously made a decision to participate in that photoshoot – does she not have the same right to do so as her male counterpart?

Indeed, Emma responded to the backlash she received by questioning the understanding of feminism from those who judged her photoshoot.

“It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is,” she said.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.

In a social media generation where #freethenipple is met with the frowns of the conservative-minded, its become even more important to educate ourselves on the movement of feminism itself.

If we did that, maybe then, as Watson clarified, we would recognise that feminism is not about judging females you find to act undesirably but not judging them at all.

If indeed, ‘feminism is about giving women choice’ – then why would we judge Watson for choosing to reveal her body. As a woman, as a feminist – it should be her prerogative.
