As if distrust in the government couldn't get any higher, we've now learned that notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar worked for the CIA, despite the fact that his activites were beyond illegal.
This revelation comes from the book Pablo Escobar In Fraganti, which was written by his son Juan Pablo Escobar Henao. He claims that the CIA helped his father ship cocaine into the USA to help finance their fight against growing communism in Central America. Thanks to The Free Though Project, we've got a quote from Henao which explains how far his father's involvement with he CIA went:
“Father worked for the CIA selling cocaine to finance the fight against Communism in Central America...The drug business is very different than what we dreamed...What the CIA was doing was buying the controls to get the drug into their country and getting a wonderful deal."
During his heyday, Pablo Escobar's cartel supplied around 80% of all cocaine in the USA, making him the ninth richest man in the world. He was eventually killed by taking a bullet through the ear during a firefight with police (it remains open to debate when the police fired the shot or if he committed suicide after realising that he was outnumbered), something which the American government may have regretted at the time.
When people refer to America and Mexico's War on Drugs, they mean it literally. Over 60,000 people have now been killed in the war, and the death toll is continuing to rise. The right thing for the USA to do would be to end the Drug War and to legalise, tax and regulate all drugs.
Doing so would put all cartels out of business overnight, would make it easier for addicts to seek help (legalising drugs would significantly lower the addiction rate), would mean that the drugs could be produced legally (illegally produced drugs are usually mixed with even more dangerous substances as the manufacturers do not have access to other materials), and it will give people the freedom of choice as to what they put in their own body.
Obama did the right thing by releasing 330 non-violent drug offenders from prison. Now let's just hope that the next time we get a Democrat in the White House, they decide to do the right thing and end the Drug War once and for all.
