Sticky Blood bring us Blood Is Stickier Than Water

Sticky Blood – Andy Nicholson and Jamie Shield – are back with a brand new EP, out on November 20th via their own label Card Gang Music.

A few months back we caught up with the Sticky Blood boys at Red Bull Studios whilst they were in the middle of a new project, and their Blood Is Stickier Than Water EP is the result.

Sticky Blood have continued with sounds and ideas that they began exploring on their debut EP I.D – experimenting with song structures, twisting genres, taking grime to 155bpm, laying MCs bars and R&B vocals over electronic beats – but have definitely taken it up a notch.

Part of this is down to working with Red Bull, as the guys have said: “Working with Red Bull was something we had always spoken about doing and it was great to be given the opportunity to team up with them to turn this project into something more than it perhaps would have been….For that extra energy and effort to be coming from somewhere as influential and established as Red Bull, it’s a big part of elevating this release.”

In signature Sticky Blood style, Blood Is Stickier Than Water is difficult to fit into one box or one genre. You go from ‘Balance’, which has a fluid, dreamy quality whilst retaining a hum of deep bass, to the quickfire grime ‘One Bar In’, featuring Coco and Snowy, to the mesmerising ‘Let Me Down’, with Tom Prior on vocals, where the tempo and the production is pulled right back before synths explode in the final third.

With all the different sounds and genres on show, Blood Is Stickier Than Water not only coalesces as one body of work - testament to their skills as producers - but it sounds both completely relevant for today and like nothing you’ve heard before. This is exactly the ethos of the record, right down to the name, which is “the insinuation that blood (which represents our music) is stickier than water (water being the diluted examples of music that we hear on a daily basis), and it’s also literal, blood is a stickier substance than water. It just feels like a name that represents where we are right now in our heads perfectly.”
