Surfer Blood at Rough Trade East

Indie | Wednesday 19th June 2013 | Conor

Last night saw Surfer Blood play a special intimate in-store performance at Rough Trade East which showcased a host of material from their recently released sophomore album, as well as some favourites taken from their earlier releases.

The Floridian four-piece kicked off proceedings with Floating Vibes, the opener of their debut album Astro Coast, an album which thrust them into the adoring eyes of the public. This was followed by the remarkably uplifting Gravity from their most recent album, Pythons. Succeeding this on both the album and in their set was Weird Shapes. They guys seem to have honed their live sound and performed as a solid outfit with superb musicianship and despite playing in such a small, intimate venue they performed with enough energy and gusto, not to mention volume, to easily fill much larger venues, which is where this band is headed.

Next in their 45 minute set was Twin Peaks, which was trailed by a flurry of new material as the band hammered through Prom Song, Slow Six, Say yes to me and the excellent album opener Demon Dance.

As their set drew to a close, the band launched into Swim, the track which first garnered them much popularity and turned them into one of the most exciting and promising guitar bands of recent years. The set was finished up with Drinking Problem from their 2011 EP Tarot Classics.

The guys play their last UK show before the festival season tonight (19th June) at the Sebright Arms. They are set to return to our shores in August to play the Festival Republic Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, and if last night is anything to go by they are sure to put on an electrifying show that has the potential to be a highlight of many festival goers weekends.
