Guestlist Recommends: The Orwells

Indie | Tuesday 18th June 2013 | James

Whilst The Strypes continue to grow creatively with their brand of 1960s-inspired bursts of Beatles-esque beat-pop, The Orwells have gained a fanbase across the pond by embodying the rock'n'roll spirit of every great band from The Rolling Stones to The Strokes. The Strypes may only be midway through their teen years but The Orwells are not much older (still only 18) and have already turned heads at their triumphant Great Escape show. The Orwells have already supported Palma Violets twice this year and look set to grow to a similar level by the end of 2013 with A&R men falling over themselves to sign the young upstarts.

Their sound is slightly derivative. That's not to turn you against them, though. They may not be creating a ground-breaking new sound but the band are re-creating tried-and-tested sounds with panache and aplomb. They are reminiscent of Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones, but they themselves admit that The Strokes and Jack White are more of a direct influence. "They are old and don't have what they used to anymore" frontman Mario Cuomo taunted in an interview recently. Fighting talk indeed. They are currently working on their debut record with TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek so you can expect experimentalism within the rigid rock'n'roll formula. You can get their EP on June 24 when it drops through National Anthem/East End Records.
