Artist of the Month: HNNY

He’s been making waves amongst the musician and music critic network for a while now, but Stockholm’s very own HNNY looks set to make it big pretty soon. Championed by the likes of Tim Sweeney and Sasha, the young Swede has been hotly in demand as a DJ, touring and gigging constantly for the last 2 years. But now, having cancelled tours in both Australia and the US, he’s focusing on producing and managing his label Yummy Records. His latest EP, Carefree, came out on Catz and Dogz’s Pets imprint in February, and he’s readying his debut LP, Sunday, for release this year.
For now, you might recognise him for 'For The Very First Time', released 3 years ago and a regular feature in many a DJ’s sets, including Breach’s BBC Essential Mix. But what’s been really tearing up his SoundCloud page recently is 'No', a fantastic house track sampling the much-loved TLC song 'Scrubs', and even 'Sneeze', a hyped-up mashup of a sample from Beyonce’s 'Partition'. 'Exactly', meanwhile, is a stunning track featuring a quite genius sample of a distorted male voice singing the refrain from Christina Aguilera’s 'What A Girl Wants', “Now I’m thanking you, for knowing exactly”.
But it’s his 2013 Boiler Room set that really helped earn him the attention he deserves; it fully showcases his fresh sound and diverse influences. Despite cancelling the majority of his shows for this year, HNNY will be playing at Corsica Studios on Friday 29th May for popular night Tessellate. Don’t miss the chance to see this exciting producer, especially as this gig should be coinciding with the debut LP’s release.
