There’s a chance you haven’t heard of Kodaline yet but that won’t last for long because their star is rising big time, and the release of their new album on Monday 17th of this month will only cement their growing popularity. Nowhere was this more apparent than at last night’s gig at the Islington Town Hall. Kodaline have released two EPs to date the first was a self-titled EP released in September 2012 and the second was released in March of this year, named after one of their most successful tracks ‘High Hopes’. The band is currently touring to promote the launch of their new album In A Perfect World, which has a couple of tracks from their previous EPs and some new material.
The group have a growing dedicated fan base (you could tell because they were all singing along to every song) and its easy to see why - with energetic performances and a unique way of involving the crowd, Kodaline are a joy to see live. With their various instruments the band manages to create a sound can move from utter melancholy to soaring joy in an instant, Steve Garrigan the lead singer switches between the guitar, tambourine, harmonica and the keyboard to make each song hit a different emotional note. Some of the standout songs were ‘High Hopes’, ‘Lose Your Mind’, ‘Love Like This’ and the extremely moving ‘All I Want’. It was a really fun performance, and the band seemed to be enjoying it just as much as the audience. For the song ‘Love Like This’ the band got the audience to film them on their phones, they plan to use everyone’s recordings to make a video for the song. It was a really unique and fun way to involve the crowd, and everyone loved it, if you were there last night then upload your videos of the song here. Just before the final song lead singer Garrigan announced that he would do a cover of Sam Cooke’s ‘Bring It On Home To Me’, the cover was completely acoustic, with none of the instruments plugged into amps, and they didn’t use any microphones, the whole band gathered right at the front of the stage and used the audience clicking their fingers as a back beat. The performance was great and not only do the band sound as amazing live as they do recorded (rarer than you think) they also sound just as amazing without the help of microphones and amps. ‘All I Want’ was a perfect song to end the set and the band left the stage to rapturous applause. I urge you to go and see this band as soon as you can and experience their moving lyrics and music combined with a beat you can dance to.
