Bastilles ‘Surprise’ Rise to Fame.

Indie | Thursday 30th May 2013 | Gabriel

Bastille’s stunning new album Bad Blood seems to have stunned even them with its huge success, taking hold of the number one spot within weeks of release. The album and single ‘Pompeii have stormed the charts and it looks it’s going to be a general trend setting a theme of success for the rest of the year.

They can’t quite believe it themselves with lead singer Dan Smith recently saying “it’s kind of surreal. I don’t think any of us have really known what to think about it really; it’s just the last thing I ever expected to happen”.

The album is beautifully crafted with a huge mix in styles ranging from the jolly and upbeat ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’ to the slightly dark ‘Bad Blood’. But the unique thing about Bastille is that despite the subject of some of their songs they always seem to give off a very positive vibe even in ‘Bad Blood’ the creepiness of the video does not come across in Smiths vocals.

Their covers seem to turn songs on their head with most of them ending up as mash-ups of many songs. ‘No Angels’ is a prime example of this with the incredible mix of; lines from Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’; music from the XX and lyrics from TLC all coming together to build into a song like nothing I have ever heard before. Another cover from Bastille to look up is their cover of Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked out of Heaven’.

In the coming years I think Bastille is going to become one of the biggest bands around so you should definitely look out for them in the future.
