Margaret Thatcher’s coffin has arrived in St Paul’s Cathedral after making its way through the streets of London to smatterings of spontaneous applause and several catcalls.
As guests gathered for her funeral, many thousands lined the streets of the capital to pay their final respects.
Her coffin, which spent the night in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, was transferred to a gun carriage at St Clement Danes on the Strand after leaving parliament in a hearse.
More than 2,000 people have been invited to the hour-long service, which prime minister David Cameron, who is giving a reading, said would be a simple, sombre affair.
The divisive nature of Baroness Thatcher, who died last week aged 87, has been exemplified in scenes on the streets, including a row between a protester brandishing a placard with the words ‘Rest in shame’ and a passer-by.
