Cutta Chase: Wisdom Teeth - Review

It’s easy to write off UKHH artists as all the same these days - with countless rappers releasing their music on a daily basis it’s only fair to say that a lot of it is relatively similar. In the same vein it’s also easy to take one look at the latest Cutta Chase release and believe you've heard it all before. Believe that this 19 track release is going to be yet another EP to be swallowed up by the already saturated UK scene. But you'd be wrong. Wisdom Teeth is poetic, beautiful and very, very well done. The record precedes Tonguestrung Part I, alongside Wisdom Teeth makes up The Tongue Strung Project, a collection of 32 tracks spread across the two LPs. Experimenting with all the elements of mind body and soul, this is a slowed down, stripped back piece of rap gold that you won’t want to sleep on.
With a record of this length naturally some of the tracks are going to be weaker than others although this seems to not be the case as there are plenty of standout tracks to choose from. Run a Lap is a loud, boom bap effort with a vibe flowing through similar to hip hop legend Fliptrix’s Wylin’ Out – a big look for the rest of the tracks to follow suit. Meditate & Maintain however is the complete opposite with a slow, melodic piano sample in the background to accompany the chilled out bars with a subtle, rhythmical feel. With lyrics such as ‘you’ve gotta live life, love it and learn’ this is clearly a testament to Cutta’s mindset about living. However not all tracks are quite as deep, Blowing Trees is a tribute to Cutta’s love for the piff, waxing lyrical about bunning trees and getting high it’s a highly relatable track to anyone that loves the herb.
With a blend of abstract and real rap lyricism Wisdom Teeth is a straight talking yet mellow record which does well to complete the last piece of The Tongue Strung Project. This is definitely recommendable if you want something a little different to your same old underground rap releases. One of the best parts of this project is that if you’re hungry more superb hip hop you can link the first instalment of the project on Cutta’s bandcamp page.
